Evening in the City

Details

Watercolour on Arches HP 100% cotton · 10in × 14in

Evening in the city, the light going. A great bank of cloud rolling through — lavender, slate, a last seam of brightness torn open along its edge. Just-rained, or about to; you can’t quite tell which. The rooftops dark and wet below, the trees a soft blur behind them.

An original watercolour of a city evening under unsettled British skies, painted on Arches HP 100% cotton paper. This is weather caught between two squalls — the moment after one shower and before the next, when the cloud breaks just long enough to throw light across the roofs. The drama is all overhead: cool slate and lavender massing above, the warm terracotta below glowing where the last of the day finds it.
